What Is Engineered Wood Flooring?
At Hakwood, engineered woodis a high-performance, versatile material created by binding together natural birch plywood using advanced adhesives and manufacturing processes. Unlike solid wood, which is cut from a single piece of timber, engineered wood is designed to maximize the strengths of wood while minimizing its natural limitations, such as susceptibility to warping, shrinking or expanding due to moisture and temperature changes.
At Hakwood, we use engineered wood in all our products, including our Architectural Wall and Ceiling Panels , to deliver enhanced durability, stability and performance. By using layers of wood, we can create materials that maintain the look and feel of natural wood but offer improved strength, uniformity and resilience. This makes engineered wood an ideal choice for a wide range of applications, from flooring to Wall and Ceiling Panels, where both aesthetic appeal and functional performance are essential. In addition, multi-layer construction of engineered wood provides better insulation and sound absorption compared to other flooring options. The additional layers enhance noise reduction—our spec sheets include "impact sound reduction" results—while also providing a more comfortable feel underfoot.
Engineered wood is also a more sustainable choice, as it allows us to utilize wood more efficiently, reducing waste while still providing the beautiful, timeless appeal of our wood products.

Engineered Wood Flooring and Sustainability at Hakwood
At Hakwood, sustainability is the foundation of everything we do. Our engineered wood flooring reflects our dedication to both quality and environmental responsibility. Engineered wood flooring is a highly durable and versatile solution for both residential and commercial spaces, designed to offer the beauty of solid wood while incorporating sustainable practices and superior performance.
One of the main advantages of engineered wood flooring is its stability. Because the birch plywood has cross glued layers, the material is much less likely to expand or contract with changes in humidity or temperature. This makes it particularly suitable for areas with fluctuating conditions, such as basements, kitchens or offices with varying levels of foot traffic.
Our engineered wood flooring consists of multiple layers of wood, with the top layer (called the European Oak Wear Layer) being a real hardwood species, while the underlying layers consist of birch plywood. This multi-layer construction provides enhanced stability and reduces the impact of changes in temperature and humidity, making engineered wood flooring less prone to warping, shrinking or expanding than traditional solid wood floors.
When it comes to sustainability, engineered wood flooring allows for the efficient use of wood, minimizing waste by utilizing smaller pieces that might otherwise go unused in solid wood production. This process helps reduce the overall environmental footprint of our products. We also work to reduce the carbon footprint of our manufacturing processes by incorporating energy-efficient technologies, like electronic forklifts and dust collection machines, and reducing water and energy consumption. This approach supports a more sustainable production cycle and contributes to a greener future.
Engineered wood flooring is built to last. Its superior durability means fewer replacements over time, reducing the demand for new materials and minimizing waste. Additionally, its maintenance and ability to withstand environmental changes make it a long-term, sustainable choice for flooring.
Our engineered wood flooring is always available with certifications such as the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) (which is available on request). We also achieve the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credits. These certifications ensure that the materials used in our flooring meet strict sustainability criteria, which is especially important for environmentally conscious builders and homeowners.
